在1981年初，VF-31中队开始由F-4换成F-14A，并在1992年升级成D型，在1998-2004年间，VF-31中队配属在 CVN-72林肯号航母上，参与对伊拉克的作战行动，在2002年圣诞节期间，VF-31中队跟其他在圣诞节执勤的中队一样，他们要给一架战机喷上带有圣诞主题的涂装，因此164601这架F-14D被中队选中，一个很有纪念意义的圣诞猫涂装就此诞生了。
